Virginia’s First Riders:
Curating the Hall Family Collection

Info

Born from the discovery of a forgotten shoebox in a family closet, this project is a collaborative passion piece developed alongside Thomas Rakes and Trey Hall. The discovery revealed a rare collection of vintage photographs documenting the Hall family’s early 30th-century adventures on the first Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the Virginia and North Carolina regions. Recognising the immense historical value of these images, the project was established to preserve this unique era of American motorcycling history. The resulting book serves as a curated archive and a story to be shared with enthusiasts and historians worldwide.

Role & Scope

Served as Creative Director and Lead Designer, working alongside the project founders to shape the overarching vision and transform a private family archive into a cohesive historical narrative. Led the storytelling process by curating and sequencing hundreds of photographs into a deliberate chronological flow that defined the book’s what, where, and why. Directed and designed the entire editorial layout, from the typographic system to the selection of premium materials including hardcover book cloth, specialized art paper, and custom binding threads. Beyond the design, managed the technical restoration of all vintage photography to ensure visual consistency, performed all pre-press preparation to ensure print-ready files, and led the end-to-end production workflow, including direct coordination and quality control with a specialist print house in Italy.
